How many times can lizards regrow their tails ??

All of us must have seen a lizard without tail.

When threatened by a predator, a lizard can shed their tail.

This is called autotomy.

The tail detaches along specialized fractures within the vertebrae.

This is a defense mechanism that serves as a distraction, allowing the lizard to escape.

Once the tail is lost, process of regeneration begins.

Lizards ' limitations of regeneration of tail

While lizards can regrow their tails, this is not limitless.

If the regenerated tail is lost again, it can not regrow in the same manner.

The original tail consists of bones, but regrown tail consists only of cartilage.

Though the nerve regrow, their arrangement and functionality may differ from original.

A lizard can potentially shed its tail multiple times throughout its life, but quality and functionality of each regenerated tail decrease over time.

Once the lizard has regenerated tail, subsequent detachment does not trigger another regeneration cycle with same complexity.

Bheja Fry question

This Bheja Fry question was asked on Koun Banega Karodpati program.

Question

In a class of 50 students, 45 students have passed the exam.  What is the failing percentage ??

1.   0%

2.  25%

3. 10%

4.  50%

Answer

First we must read the question carefully.

Though it is saying about the number of passing students, at the end it is asking for failing percentage !!!!

We will go by step by step,

Total students  =  50

Students who have passed   =  45

Students who failed  =  Total students  -  Number of passed students

                                              50    -      45

Students who have failed  =  5

Failing percentage  =  (  Failed students  )  /  (  Total number of students )  *  100

==>>     (   5  /  50  )  *  100

==>>       0.1   *   100

==>>       10 %

Similarly, passing percentage  = ( passed students / total students )  / 100

==>>  (   45 /  50 )  * 100

==>>    0.9 * 100

==>>    90  %

Why don't Titan's sea have deltas??

Titan, Saturn's largest moon has lakes and rivers just like Earth  !!!

But these are not filled with water but liquid methane and ethane.

Titan's lakes and seas are filled with liquid hydrocarbons.  These liquids have different properties affecting sediment transportation and deposition.

Titan's surface lacks significant amounts of sediments which is essential for delta formation.

Titan's surface is formed by cryovolcanism  and hydrocarbon lakes rather than water driven erosion and deposition.

These factors combined make it difficult for delta formation on Titan unlike on Earth   !!!!

Are there any countries with no mosquitoes ??

 The answer is      YES  !!!

Iceland is the country which don't have mosquitoes.

While its neighbours including Norway, Scotland and Greenland  are home to multiple mosquito species,  Iceland remains mosquito free  !!!

Antarctica is also mosquito free but it is a CONTINENT  not a country  !!!

How come Iceland is mosquito free  ??

Scientists have several theories.

Mosquitoes simply not made it to Iceland yet  !!!

Iceland's harsh climate and frozen water disrupt development and kill mosquito eggs.

However, with climate change, Iceland's mosquito free status might not last forever  !!!

This year 2025, mosquitoes are spotted in Iceland  !!!

Why some volcanoes spew gas and ash, others lava ??

After laying dormant for 12,000 years, the Hayli Gubbi in northeastern Ethiopia erupted on Sunday.

But instead of hot, molten lava  flowing down the mountain side, thick plumes of ash and gaseous matter dominated the eruption.

The difference in whether a volcano erupts with flowing lava or violent bursts of ash is determined by these  ----

Magma Viscosity  (  thickness  )

Viscosity is fluid's resistance to flow. It says how " sticky " it is.

It is primarily controlled by magma's silica (  SiO2  ) content.

Low viscosity gives "  Runny magma  "  having less silica.

High viscosity gives  "  Sticky magma  " having high silica.

Magma contains dissolved gases  (  mostly water vapour and carbon dioxide  ).

As magma rises, pressure decreases.  These gases try to escape and form bubbles.

In low viscosity magma, magma flows out as lava.

But in high viscosity magma, sticky magma traps the gas bubbles, preventing them from escaping.

The pressure builds up immensely.

When the pressure exceeds the strength of surrounding rock, the eruption is violent and explosive.

It shatters the magma into tiny pieces of rock, mineral and glass called volcanic ash.

While Hayli Gubbi is built from low viscosity magma, it was dormant for 12,000 years  !!!

This dormancy developed a high gas pressure and resulted in explosive eruption that produced a large ash plume.

Now the ash cloud has surpassed Himalayas and moving towards Japan   !!!

Everyday food which must not be reheated

Reheating left overs is a common practice in many Indian homes.

Just warm up yesterday's rice, today's lunch is ready ..!!!!

Here are the 2 everyday food, which must not be reheated.

1.   Rice

Plain rice seems harmless but once cooked,  it can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Reheating doesn't always kill these bacteria if the rice was left too long.

It can lead to food poisoning and stomach upset.

However if the rice must be reheated, it's been refrigenerated right away and heated thoroughly only once.

2.  Potato

Potatoes tend to lose its texture and flavour when reheated. But beyond that, cooked potatoes can grow bacteria.

To avoid waste, we can turn the left over potato dishes into cold chat or sandwich dressing.

Why some people get sleepy while travelling in a bus or car?

Even through we are well rested beforehand, we always drift off during a long journey by any vehicle.

Why sleepiness strike while travelling  ???

1.  Rhythmic motion

The gentle, low frequency vibrations of a car or bus, mimic the soothing and rocking motion that many people find comforting. This steady movement gives state of relaxation.

2. White noise and reduced sensory input

The consistant hum of engine produces a form of White noise that can further induce drowsiness. With few distractions to keep the brain engaged,we easily succumb to sleep.

3. Lack of natural light

Sunlight signal our body when to be awake and when to take rest. The enclosed environment of car or train, limit exposure to natural light. This results in increased desire to sleep.

4.  Fatigue and sleep deprivation

Even a short journey can turn into an unintended nap for those who lack sufficient sleep.

5.  Monotony

Long journeys often lack stimulating activities that could keep the brain engaged.  This makes the brain to enter monotonous state resulting in drowsiness.

He is aware of new  updates on astronomy.

I am always ready to cross question him  !!!!

I asked him one question,

Why Pluto is considered as a dwarf planet instead of a planet ???

Aniruddha  :   There are some standards to be fulfilled by a celestial body to be a planet.

Pluto dont  satisfy them. Thats why Pluto is not a planet  !!!!

Me :  Which was the condition that Pluto didn't satisfy ???

Aniruddha  :  Pluto don't have its own orbit to circulate around Sun.

                            It uses Neptune's orbit   !!!!

This was new thing to me.

Me :  If Pluto is using Neptune's orbit , there is a possibility that they may collide with each other.......

Aniruddha  :  Since billions of years,  it is happening.  Both of them didn't collide   !!!!

So, in future  also , both of them may not collide with each other.

You don't worry.......!!!!!

Listening to that, I changed the topic of discussion..........

Why crocodiles shed tears ??

Crocodile's crying is a physiological response than an emotional one   !!!

Crocodiles' tear glands are closely linked to the movement of their jaws and skulls.

During feeding, pressure on these glands triggers fluid secretion.

Additionally, when crocodiles move from water to dry land, these tears help lubricate and protect them.

Bheja Fry question

This Bheja Fry question is having an unique answer.

Question

Take me, add me to myself

Then again for health

Now divide by 3, you see

You are staring right back at me  !!!!

Answer

Let's solve step by step ....

It is given that,    Take me ,  add me to myself

                                  Then again for health

Let 'me' be  'x'

From the above 2 lines,  it is understood that

We must add 'x' to itself 2 times

Which is lighter ??

This question was asked on  Koun Banega Karodpati program.

Question

In mirrors of James Webb Telescope which light weight element is used   ??

1.   Berilium

2.  Silicon

3.  Lithium

4.  Titanium

Answer

As a science student,  I know Lithium is comparatively lighter than all the others given in options.

But answer was    BERILIUM     !!!

I wondered how   ??

I searched the web.

James web telescope is a space based infrared telescope.

Though Lithium is light weight metal,  it is highly reactive and have structural deformities while working on low temperature of space.

That's why Berilium is chosen over Lithium to make the mirrors of James web telescope as it fulfills the required conditions.
