How does God Shiv got the name Dakshinamurthy?
Once god Shiv was performing his dance i.e. Tandava Nritya. That time, some saints who had come to visit Shiv, were witnessing Shiv's dance. They didnt disturb Shiv from doing the dance nor Shiv observed them. Shiv was performing dance in the time of Uttaranayana of Hindu calender i.e. from the month of January till the month of July. He went on dancing for 6 months.
When Dakshinayan started i.e. at the end of Uttarayana , Shiv stopped doing dance and observed the saints standing there. Saints prayed Shiv to teach them the dance he was performing. Shiv agreed and taught the dance to saints on the eve of Dakshinayan. Hence he got the name Dakshinamurthy.
