What are the origins of names. Arctic and Antarctic ???

" Arctic " in Greek language refers to the northern sky under the constellations Ursa major and Ursa minor.

In Greek, it means Great Bear and Little Bear   !!!

Ancient navigators used this constellation to find " North  " so Arctic became shorthand for northern region..

---------------------------------------------

Antarctic means Opposite of Arctic  !!!

Polar bears live in Arctic, not Antarctic.

If we see  " Bear constellation " on sky or actual polar bears, we are in Arctic region.

If we don't see either Bear constellation or real polar bear, then the polar region is Antarctic !!!
