Water melon snow

Water melon snow is also known as blood snow, pink snow.

Water melon snow is found world wide in mountains and polar regions.

This snow has a faint fruity smell but have laxative effect if eaten.

The water melon colour comes from fresh water green algae chlamydomonas nivalis.

They grow up on snow. In summer, they produce a red pigment to protect themselves from sun's intense rays.

Snow looks white as it reflects the sunlight. Unfortunately, this pigment found in the snow reduces snow's ability to reflect heat, leading to faster melting rates.
