Why is nitrus oxide called laughing gas ?

When I came to know that nitrus oxide is called as laughing gas , I thought by inhaling that gas , people start to laugh uncontrollably.

But that is not so.

This odourless and colourless gas suppresses the central nervous system and creates a sense of euphoria in a person.

When inhaled , nitrus oxide slows down the central nervous system so rational and thinking becomes little slower .

This in conjunction with feelings of euphoria can make a person to laugh but not everyone laughs   !!!

Most people experience tingling or vibrating sensation , sleepy or drowsiness

That's why , nitrus oxide is used as anaesthetic to sedate patients and releave pain .

Nitrus oxide starts working within 5 seconds of administration. Patients will be normal as soon as they inhale oxygen
