Somaliland

Somaliland is currently making global headlines due to a major diplomatic breakthrough and a historic election that has reshaped its quest for international recognition.

Somaliland is located in the Horn of Africa that is the Eastern most part of African continent.

We can think of it as the top part of map of Somalia.

While it is internationally considered by most countries and the UN to be a part of Federal Republic of Somalia, it has operated as a self governing, independent state with its own borders, army and currency since 1991.

On December 26, 2025 Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognize Somaliland as a sovereign and independent nation.

The recognition is seen as a way for Israel to secure a foothold in Horn of Africa.

So that it can monitor Red Sea shipping and counter Houthi influence in Yemen.

The recognition has triggered a global backlash and massive diplomatic fallout.
