Why do ships move slowly ??

 I had read the report that ship carrying LPG has crossed Hormuz strait few days ago.

Today it has reached India  !!!

We are in a gas emergency condition and why the ships carrying LPG are coming so slowly  ??!!

Ships move slowly because of the extreme physical resistance of water and the massive cost of trying to overcome it.

Moving through water is extremely difficult compared to moving through air.

Water is 800 times more denser than air !!! This creates immense hydrodynamic drag that pushes against ship's hull.,

The power required to move a ship increases at cubic rate relatively to its speed. This means if we want to double the speed of the ship, we need 8 times more engine power  !!!!

As ship moves, it must physically push water out of it's way.  To go faster, ship requires colossal amount of energy.

That's why for most commercial shipping, speed is sacrificed for carrying capacity and fuel efficiency.

Because of their vast size, stopping and turning takes long time and higher speeds make this much more dangerous,.......
