Katchateevu Island

 Katchateevu Island is in news nowadays.

This is an inhabited island and is the center of dispute between the fishermen of Tamilnadu and Sri Lanka.

This island is formed because of volcanic eruption in 14th century. 

This island is stratagically important for fishing activities. 

In 1974, India Gandhi ceded this island to her Sri Lankan counterpart through maritime agreement.

But this is the place where Tamilnadu fishermen  go  when Indian water gets depleted of fish. 

They are getting detained by Sri Lankan navy for crossing international maritime border. 

This is causing a sense of anxiety and insecurity amongst the fishermen of Tamilnadu. 

Now Indian government is making tireless efforts for the retrieval of island which was unilaterally given to Sri Lanka in 1974. 

Poisonous gas carbon monoxide

 Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels like gasoline, wood, charcoal or any other fuel. It has the chemical formula of C O . Improperly ventilated appliances and engines may allow carbon monoxide to accumulate to dangerous levels

Why carbon monoxide is hazardous ? 

When we inhale combustion fumes which has higher levels of carbon monoxide, our body starts replacing oxygen in red blood cells with carbon monoxide . This prevents oxygen from reaching cells and organs and they eventually die. 

The amount of carbon monoxide produced by various fuel combustion appliances is not a problem. But when the gas is produced in closed ventilation, carbon monoxide may get accumulate to a dangerous life threatening level . 

Depending on the degree and length of the time of inhalation of carbon monoxide, concerned person may suffer permanent brain damage or even death. 

We can prevent carbon monoxide accumulating in dangerous levels . We must ensure that the appliances and engines operate in a fully ventilated area . That's all !! 

Bravery of Mulla Naseeruddin

 Once soldiers who had taken part in the battle have returned home and they were sharing their experiences. 

The soldiers were from Mulla Naseeruddin 's village. Even Mulla Naseeruddin had attended the get together. 

As the soldiers were narrating their experiences, Mulla Naseeruddin stood up to say something. 

Mulla Naseeruddin said, " once I had chopped off the hand of the enemy soldier in the battle ground ."

Listening to that, one of the soldier present there, said " You could have chopped his head instead of the hand".

Naseeruddin said, " I could not do that. Before me, someone else had chopped his head  !!!" 

Bheja fry question

 This is the question I came across when I was listening to Web radio.

This question though sounds simple, but it is not. 

It was the time when Akbar was ruling Agra. That time a severe flood 

happened in Agra. Whole city got inundated. But nothing happened to 

Tajmahal. How?

After listening to the question, I started thinking about what could be the reason

 for this? I thought maybe Tajmahal was constructed on a high altitude area and

 that's why it didn't get submerged. 

But actual reason is different. 

When Akbar was ruling, Tajmahal was not built.

Tajmahal was built by Shahjahan, who is the grandson of Akbar!!!! 

Fastest moving muscle in the human body

 The fastest moving muscle in the human body is orbicularis oculi.

We have them in our eyes. One in each eye.

These muscles control the closing action of eyelids.

When an involuntary action that protects the eye is triggered, for example an object touching the eye

These muscles shut the eyelids in less than 100 milli seconds  !!!

This phenomenon has entered in Guinness world records also. 

Why do we hear a pop sound when hydrogen gas is burning ?

 Hydrogen gas is very much flammable . When we pass hydrogen gas through a lighted match stick , we hear a pop sound .

What is actually happening is hydrogen undergoes chemical reaction where it combines with oxygen in the air thus forming water in vapour form and enormous amount of energy .

This energy is in the form of heat . We know that heat causes the gases to expand . Since a lot of heat is generated  , the adjacent air expands so quickly that the gas molecules break the sound barrier .

If the process is done in a small way  ,then we hear just the pop sound . If it is carried in a big way  , then we can hear the bang sound .

Who is the real owner?

 Once King Akbar "s friend wanted to meet him. Friend is also the king of  neighbouring kingdom.

Friend decided to go alone riding on a horse. He knew the way very well. 

Friend was riding on the horse. Suddenly he saw an old man falling down. 

He got down the horse. He really wanted to help the old man.

Friend was unaware that the old man is actually wicked.

Friend helped the old man to climb the horse and together they reached the kingdom of Akbar .

But as soon as they reached the court of Akbar , old man started showing his true identity .

He accused the friend king of stealing his horse and now saying it as his own .

Friend king was shocked by the allegations against him. He wanted to watch how Akbar is going to solve this problem .

Matter came infront of Akbar. Akbar as usual asked Birbal to solve the problem .

Birbal agreed and took both of them near a group of horses standing.

Birbal asked both of them to identify the horse, they are claiming theirs .

First it was the turn of old man . But he failed to identify his own horse amongst all !!!

But friend king was successful in identifying his pet .. Thus Birbal was successful in solving the problem.

What is at the end of a rainbow?

 This question I came across when I was listening to Web radio.

The RJ asked this question to listeners, what is at the end of the rainbow?

I thought it is a complete scientific question. 

We all see rainbow as a semicircle. Rainbow consists of 7 colours. 

We all know that it comes in the order of VIBGYOR, where

V = violet

I = indigo

B = blue

G = green

Y = yellow

O = orange

R = red

These are the 7 colours in a rainbow according to  their wavelength. 

Now coming back to the question, what is at the end of the rainbow?

Rainbow is always seen in semi circle shape. 

Semicircle has 2 ends. Right and left. 

I was confused by thinking that from which side we must tell what is at the end. 

I was sure either it is violet colour or red colour. 

Without giving stress to my mind, I was waiting for RJ to tell the correct answer. 

Soon, the answer is out. 

It is the letter ' w '.

Rainbow = R a I n b o w.

W is at the end of the rainbow !!!! 

What is written in our destiny , that only will happen ...

Once divine couple God Shiva and Goddess 

Parvati had come to earth to know how people

are leading their lives.

That time Goddess Parvati saw a man begging 

. He was looking unhealthy too . Parvati who is 

always compassionate towards people who are 

in trouble , wanted to help the beggar 

She asked her husband God Shiva to help the 

beggar by making him rich . But God Shiva 

refused by saying that living a rich life is not 

written in beggar's destiny . Whatever is not 

written in our destiny , we will not get it.

But Goddess Parvati was adamant . She 

pressurised her husband to help the beggar . No

 husband have the courage to say no to his

 wife's demands

God Shiva thought of a plan . He said he will 

keep a bag of gold coins in between the way 

beggar is coming . He said he is going to wait 

and watch what is going to happen .

Beggar was coming . Suddenly a thought came 

to his mind , how he would walk by closing his 

eyes . He started walking closing his eyes . He 

passed the place where God Shiva has kept the 

bag of gold coins .

As his eyes were closed , he didn't noticed the 

bag . Beggar thought to himself , he is lucky that

 he is not blind . Otherwise how he would 

continue begging ?

He didn't realised that he has lost the 

opportunity to become rich . Being rich , was not

 written in his destiny .

Flouride , a double edge sword

 Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay 

formation. If toothpaste containing flouride 

given to children whose permanent teeth are 

about to form , then flouride makes the tooth be 

stronger and resistant to tooth decay .

But if developing teeth absorb too much flouide

 , then they can become permanently stained . 

Adults who take in more flouride throughout 

their life time , are more prone to bone fractures 

.

Hence fluoride must be taken in a prescribed 

manner by a doctor as it is having both 

beneficial and hazardous qualities .
