Why does a fish die after taking out of water?

Why does a fish die after taking out of water?

This question may seem silly. Everyone knows that fish need water to survive. Fish uses a pair of gills , which it uses to breathe under water.
The gills extract the oxygen from water molecule . Gills maintains regulation between oxygen and hydrogen proportion of water molecule.
When a fish is taken out of water and exposed only to air , not the oxygen and hydrogen contained water then its gills can not control the oxygen taken. Its delicate balance between hydrogen and oxygen is lost. It dies because of inhalation of overdose of oxygen.
