Churning of milk using centrifugal force

We know when we churn milk , we get cream and skimmed milk. But do you know that in milk processing diaries , they use centrifugal force to separate the cream from milk ?


Science is behind everything we do. Now let us see how they make use of centrifugal force.

They use centrifugal separator for this work. This is based on the fact that when two liquids of different specific gravities revolve around the same center at same distance with the same angular velocity , a greater centrifugal force is exerted on the heavier liquid than on the lighter one.

In this case, milk can be regarded as made of two liquids of different specific gravities , serum and the fat.

Milk enters the rapidly revolving disc. The solid impurities in the milk are thrown back to the outer surface. The cream which is less dense than the skimmed milk settles inside of the disc.

Thus, cream and milk are separated from each other.
