Last month, there was a devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey.
What caused the earthquake ??
The earth 's crust is made up of searate plates that nestle alongside with each other.
Turkey and Syria lie at the confluence of 3 such plates. They are
1. Arabian plate
2. Anatolia plate
3. Eurosia plate
The rubbing and moving of the above plates makes this region seismically active zone.
Friction of moving plates is responsible for the damages of the earthquake.
Earthquakes are measured on the scale called moment magnitude scale.
A tremor of the magnitude 2.5 or less can not be felt but can be detected by instruments.
Earthquake upto 5 can be felt and cause minor damages like cracking of the walls of the house.
The major earthquake like that of Turkey which was of magnitude 7.8, causes major damages.
