Statue of liberty's original colour was shiny, metallic, dull brown colour as it is made of copper.
Copper exterior reacted with oxygen, water and air pollution over several decades.
This chemical reaction created a thin protective layer called " patina ".
This green patina actually protects the underlying copper from deeper corrosion and weathering.
Hence US government chose not to paint or clean the statue as this green coloured patina naturally protects the statue !!!
