How did ancestors come to know time?

How did ancestors come to know time?

In yester years, clock was not there. But also people used to come to know the time. They were putting a stick infront of Sun. On the position of the image of stick, they were coming to know whether it is aftrnoon or evening. Later developments happened.
Alfread was the king of England. At that time, people have invented candles. A candle will take complete 8 hours to burn completely. Alfread divided timings of a day into 3 parts. He used to lit a candle morning as the sun rises. That is 7 o'clock. It takes its time to burn i.e. 8 hours. Means it will be exactly 1 o'clock in afternoon when the candle burning is over.
At that time, one more candle is lit. Then it will take another 8 hours. Then it will be exactly 9 o'clock in night. Like this, theu were coming to know the timing. Then there is an invention of clocks to find correct timing second by second.
