Curse given to Garuda

                                           Curse given to Garuda

Garuda is well known for carrying god Vishnu on his back. But Garuda being an eagle, was having grudge against serpents. This is because mother of serpents Kadru , cheatingly made Garuda's mother Vinuta as her slave. Though Garuda suceeded to free his mother, his anger against serpents was still there. Wherever and whenver he sees serpents , he used to kill them .
On the banks of Yamuna ,there was a big serpent called Kaliya. Garuda was eyeing him. Whenver he used to fly in that direction, he was making sure to hurt Kaaliya. But since Kaaliya was large, its difficult for Garuda to kill him. He used to hurt him.
Even Kaaliya used to fight back. In the fight between two,  whole surrounding used to get dirty. On the banks of Yamuna , there was a saint called Soubhari doing meditation. One day, in the fight between Garuda and Kaaliya , his meditation got disturbed.
Angry Soubhari  saw both eagle and serpent fighting. He realised the situation. He cursed Garuda as not to fly near banks of Yamuna. He ordered Kaaliya to leave that place immediately. Kaaliya was happy with the curse given to Garuda that he must not fly near banks of Yamuna. He made sure that though he leaves that place, he will be in banks of Yamuna.
Then he left for Vrindavan. There he was living near banks of Yamuna. Now he is not afraid of anybody. So, he was uncontrollable. He used to frighten people and also the animals which are coming there to drink water. At that time , Krishna was in Vrindavan.
Krishna received many complaints of Kaaliya's troublesome nature. One day, when he went to drink water, Kaaliya dragged him inside water. But Krishna fought with Kaaliya and defeated him. He also danced on the head of Kaaliya. Thus, he got the name of Kaalinga Mardana.
At this time also, there are no eagles seen flying on banks of Yamuna. Till today, the rivalry between eagles and serpents is well known.
