Today is Maha Shivratri .
Flower ketaki ( kannada - kedige ) is widely used in puja of nag and god vishnu . But it is not used in puja of God shiv . There e is a story behind that .
Once , God Vishnu and god Brahma were quarelling regarding who is superior amongst them ? At that time , God shiv decided to make them ego less , and he took the form of a long light pillar and came infront of them .
Vishnu and Brahma were surprised to see such a long light pillar . They decided to check out the beginning and end of the light pillar and whoever comes first finding the answer will be considered superior .
Vishnu decided to find out the beginning of pillar and he took the form of a wild boar and started digging the ground . Similarly , Brahma took the form of a swan and flew up to find out the end of light pillar .
Time passed . Both of them unable to find out anything . God Vishnu decided to come back and to accept his defeat . Even God Brahma decided to come back but his ego doesn't allow him to accept the defeat .
At that time , he saw a ketaki flower . He got one idea to use the flower as his supporter . He asked the flower to stand with his claim of finding out the end of light pillar and flower agreed .
Likewise , both of them came back and there god shiv was standing . God Vishnu had already accepted his defeat. Beaming with pride , God Brahma claimed that he was successful in finding out the end of light pillar.
But God Vishnu doubted his claim . At that time , flower ketaki came front and agreed to Brahma claim . This made God shiv to get angry .
Because he himself took out the form of light pillar which dont have neither beginning nor end . So he cursed God Brahma that no human being will worship him from now onwards.
He cursed flower ketaki for telling lie , that it will not be used and offered in shiv puja .
