Less known form of God Vishnu - God Hayagreeva / Hayavadana

Lord Hayagreeva is an incarnation of God Vishnu . He is a horse faced God and an epitome of intelligence . He is also the guru of Goddess Saraswati.

The purpose of God taking this incarnation is interesting . There was another one by the name Hayagreeva - a demon .

Even he is  horse headed . He got a boon from Goddess Durga , that he can be killed only by one more Hayagreeva just like him .

This boon instilled a sense of invincibility and he started harassing the Devas . Devas asked God Vishnu to help , but despite a long struggle , even Vishnu was unable to kill Hayagreeva.

Tired as he was , God Vishnu returned to Vaikuntha and began meditation to rejuvenate himself. But demon Hayagreeva's torture increased more and again Devas approached Vishnu for help. But they were unable to rouse him from meditation.

Devas asked the swarm of termites to assist in waking up Vishnu from meditation , by gnawing him from their sting . However , the blow of sting was so severe that Vishnu's head was severed from his body .

Devas were mortified by this and prayed to Goddess Durga to help them . She then told them about her boon to demon Hayagreeva , and asked Devas to attach the head of a horse on God Vishnu .

Brahma attached the head of a white horse to Vishnu's body. Revived Vishnu entered the battle field and killed demon Hayagreeva . This incarnation of God Vishnu is known as " Hayagreeva / Hayavadana " . Saint Vadiraj of Sode mutt was worshiping him .
