Why is Australia called continent whereas other islands not?

Why is Australia called continent whereas other islands not?

When I was in school, by seeing the atlas I often wondered why is Australia called continent , though it looks like an island !

There are many islands . They could be called continents. Why only Australia?

The fact for granting continent status to Australia is purely geological. Australia is often called as " island continent ".

Australia sits on its own tectonic plate. Also, its flora and fauna are unique to itself. Can we find Kangaroos living in other places than in zoos?

But though Australia is a developed country , most of its places are actually deserts ! No human can live in that part.

Australia's famous cities and also the places where people live, mostly are situated near the sea shore. Australia is a barren continent .
