Curse that resulted in birth of Bhishma

Curse that resulted in birth of Bhishma

Bhishma was considered the eldest in Kuru dynasty. He was " ichcha marani " meaning that he can die when he wish.
Bhishma was unmarried . He sacrificed his all wish just to fulfill his father's wish to marry again. Bhishma is the son of Shantanu and Ganga.
In his previous birth , Bhishma was one among Ashtavasu , named " Dyuva ".
Ashtavasu were 8 , they kidnapped the cow of Saint Vasishta. Vasishta , through his divine power came to know of culprits. Among Ashtavasu, it was Dyuva's idea to kidnap the cow. All the others just assisted the action.
After coming to know of culprits, Vasishta ordered them to return his cow and also he cursed them. Except Dyuva, all the others were cursed to be born humans but they can meet their end soon after their birth. But Dyuva, as he master minded the whole incident was cursed to spend his entire life as human and also can wish for his death after facing all the troubles of life.
Like wise, Ganga became the wife of Shantanu on a condition that Shantanu must not object her of any work.  If he does, Ganga will go back to her place.
After marriage , Ganga became 7 times pregnant. But as the child was born, Ganga was immersing and killing the toddler in water. They were the first 7 of Ashtavasu.
But when she had given birth to 8th one, ( that was Dyuva ) , Shantanu objected her of killing the new born child. Since Shantanu had broken his promise, Ganga left the 8th child with him and departed. The child is Bhishma.
As per the curse, he has to experience all the trouble and problems of life before his death. Thats why , he had wished for his death during Kurukshetra war lying on the bed of arrows.
