What are fire lines?

Nowadays , newspapers carry the news of wild fires in the forests. Wild fires may be man made or natural. It is difficult to come to know the cause. It was advised to create a fire line in order to fight with wild fires. But what is a fire line?
Fire lines are the areas which are cleared of vegetation in the hopes of stopping or atleast slowing a fire. It is meant to break the path of the fire.
The creation of fire lines is very critical because fire can quickly get out of control. By depriving the fire its fuel , a fire line slows down the advance of fire and also confines it to a specific area , which can make fighting with fire much easier.
Typically , fire lines are made by churning up the earth . But rivers and roads which pass through forest can also be considered as fire lines.
