Why are fuses used?

A fuse is a thin wire that is used in electrical circuit designs. It melts if the entering current to circuit exceeds its pre determined value.
Thus, fuses will disconnect the equipment from the supply , before damage can occur.  Fuse wires must be chosen correctly.
If we have an equipment which requires 5 Ampere of current to operate, fuse wires must be of the same value as equipment's value.
Suppose, current of 7 Ampere is flowing in circuit, then fuse wire will melt because of excess current that is flowing and there is an open circuit.
Equipment is safe !
